1. 110lbs Nathan Scott (Brainerd) dec Robert Mazaries (Fergus Falls)
2. 88lbs Albert Boldt (Wadena) RET1 Matt Monette (WBL)
Albert is a sharp young kid who always impresses me. Monette, however, put up a good fight and I thought fought well in the first round, but he did not come out for the 2nd.
3. 125lbs Luke Zontelli (Brainerd) dec Jordan Lamere (SCGG)
Very close fight. Both fighters were winded. I think Jordan did enough to win. There are two Zontelli’s that fight out of Brainerd who are decent, scrappy kids who look like they like to fight.
4. 155lbs Eugene Garcia (Fergus Falls) RSC1 Laboy (White Earth)
Eugene lost his last fight in Wadena, but he looked awesome in this fight. Crisp, powerful punches and the ref stopped the fight after Laboy was taking too much punishment.
5. 137lbs Andre Monette (WBL) RSC1 Casey Holt (Detroit Lakes)
Andre seemed much more experienced and was very quick with his combination’s and Casey couldn’t keep up.
6. HWT John Laplante (SCGG) RSC2 Jud Whirly (SC Workout)
John took control in the second round and was hitting Jud with tremendous power shots…..it was unreal how Jud took those shots. But, after some more huge power punches, the ref was forced to step in and stop the fight.
7. 150lbs Rondell Hubbert (Fergus Falls) dec Brenden Flyer (SC Workout)
This was a good scrap with both fighters doing good work. Close fight but Rondell took it. Rondell had better footwork and was sharper. I’ve seen Brenden a few times and he has a weird bad habit of constantly raising his lead hand above his head while holding his gloves in the guard position….it seemed to have gotten better but still something he should work on.
8. 220lbs Jose Perez (Wadena) RET1 Dylan Windorski (Brainerd)
Jose must have hit Dylan with a good body shot in the first round because in the middle of the round, Dylan walked to his corner and puked in the bucket for a good minute…..fight over.
9. 155lbs Eugene Sommers (White Earth) RSC1 Brandon Wheeler (Fergus Falls)
Eugene is a very good boxer. I don’t know if he is old enough for the tournament, but he could give Tanner Hultin from Fergus trouble at 152.
10. 140lbs Fellbule Becerra (WBL) RSC1 Ry Denzel (Fergus Falls)
Fellbule hit Ry with shots in the face that made Ry’s nose to start running like a faucet…..fight over.
11. HWT Glen Sommers (White Earth) dec Tony Bushey (Cass Lake)
Glen has improved and looks to have dropped about 20 pounds since last year. But, Glen and his coach looked surprised when the decision was announced in Glen’s favor….and I was surprised too. It was a close fight, but I feel that Tony fought a good fight and should have been given the nod.
12. 158lbs Shane Kern (Detroit Lakes) dec Tom Fanjoy (Brainerd)
When I first saw this fight listed on the program, I thought Tom was in trouble. Tom fought at 141 in the UMGG in Walker last year and Kern is a very strong, powerful puncher. But, Fanjoy held his own….Tom was quicker but just couldn’t get his shots off and Kern would impose his will.
