75 lbs Matt Umland (Wadena) dec Derek Dolezal (Willmar)
-Close fight, Derek was punching and countering off the back foot while Matt kept coming forward. Matt outworked Derek to get the win.

139 lbs Charles Carpenter (Wadena) dec Joe Jaye (St Cloud)
-First fight for both. Lots of throwing. Close until the 3rd until Joe started to get tired.

110 lbs Julie Jackson (Wadena) dec Amanda Larson (Willmar)
-Entertaining fight with a clash of styles. Julie had a reach advantage and used it well, very rangy. Amanda was shorter and fought well on the inside when she was there. Good win for Julie.

S-HWY BJ Gotchi (Leech Lake) by RET1 David Hayde (St Cloud)
-First fight for both boxers. Both were throwing big power punches. After the first round, David was checked by the doctor and the fight was stopped. He didn’t seem hurt but something must have happened for the fight to be stopped.

115 lbs Neil Janson (Wadena) EXH Kevin Harper (Wadena)
-First fight for Neil. Both were skilled punchers. Entertaining exhibition.

175 lbs Cole Cottrell (Wadena) dec Luke Genz (Brainerd)
-This was a good fight. First fight for both guys. Luke had a big fanbase from Brainerd show up which made it even more fun. Both were fighting well in the first two rounds, but with Cole landing the more meaningful shots. The third round was great, the best round of the night. The entire fight was a brawl and in the third Luke floored Cole and the fans went crazy. Cole made it out of the round and won a clear, well deserved decision.

106 lbs Albert Boldt (Wadena) dec Charleas Oothoudt (Leech Lake)
-I always love to see Albert fight, he’ll be great when he gets bigger and older. He had a severe size disadvantage in this fight, he had a much shorter reach than Charleas and Charleas used his reach very well. Albert did get in the inside and fought well there. Lots of punches thrown by both in the first two rounds, and both were exhausted in the 3rd. It was close, but I thought Charleas landed more.

S-HWY Jose Perez (Wadena) dec Devin Smith (Leech Lake)
-First fight for Devin. Jose dropped him in the first 30 seconds. Devin was smothering and both couldn’t seem to get a good range because of it. Fight went the distance and Jose won a clear decision.

148 lbs Rondell Hubbert (Fergus Falls) dec TJ Steward (Wadena)
-Great fight. Rondell is a little quicker than TJ, both have ripping hooks and hooks to the body, TJ is a great body puncher….something you don’t see much in the amateurs. Rondell is a good boxer/puncher and won the decision.

HWY Justin Isaacson (Wadena) RSC2 Ben Dohls (Wilmar)
-Justin and Jesse Wannamacher have been the most improved boxers out of Region 4 the last two years. Justin went down a weight division, looks to be in a lot better shape. Throws some big big shots. Justin dropped Ben in the first round with a shot off the temple. Floored him again in the 2nd and the fight was stopped.

185 lbs Nick Soliah (Fergus Falls) dec Patchrick Szathmary (Wadena)
-Really close fight. Patchrick was getting his shots off first and I thought he landed more than Nick. Close fight.

162 lbs Jesse Wannamacher (Fergus Falls) dec Dewayne Steward (Wadena)
-Four 2 minute rounds. Jesse has improved a lot, looked really good last night. His speed has increased. Dewayne boxed very well in the first and landed more than Jesse. Dewayne is a great boxer, but Jesse still likes to brawl and lured Dewayne into a slug fest in the 2nd round and Jesse dropped him. Both fought well the rest of the fight, but with Jesse landing more in the final 3 rounds to get the victory. Great fight.

It is the season to be grateful for many things as we enter the holidays, one of the things I am grateful for is that sixteen amateur boxers decided to work off their Thanksgiving dinner calories by competing on Brunette Boxing’s show on Saturday night. There was not a “Turkey” amongst the group as the standing room only crowd was delighted to see 8 competitive bouts.

#1. B.J. Bellanger Sisseton SD 70 Francisco Escamilla – Rochester

These guys wasted no time in getting the show started with both of them throwing both hands form the opening bell. Bellanger was a little busier and that led him to victory. Bellanger by dec.

#2. Matt Nikodyn – St. Cloud 170 Anthony Rose – Uppercut Gym

Two big and rangy boxers who can both hit. These guys landed meaningful blows on each other in bunches. Nikodyn pursuing and Rose countering, in the third round Rose landed several straight right hands which swung it in his favor. Rose by Dec.

#3. Ariel Shifren – MN Top Team 120 Nate Burkhalter – Rochester

Shifren moved up in class of opposition for this one with Burkhalter widely recognized as one of the top boxers in his division. Shifren came out to do some damage but was met with an onslaught of blows to the body and the head. After his second standing eight-count referee Gary Mizwa called a halt to the action. Burkhalter by RSC II

#4. Jesse Watts – Sisseton SD 140 Irvin Freeman III – Brunettes

If we handed out awards for the most improved boxer Freeman would be a candidate. Watts was determined and tried to press the action but Freeman used both body and head blows to give Watts two standing eight counts, one in the first round and one in the second on the way to victory. Freeman by Dec

#5. Jamal Morris – Rochester 120 Chiking Cha – Brunettes

Ckiking decided to move up his level of competition in meeting Morris and both met at center ring exchanging shots. Morris landed solid jabs with Chiking landing some solid left hooks to the body. At the end of the first Chiking’s nose was bleeding fairly badly. In the second both went at it again with Morris landing several clean shots to the nose of Chiking, after the round coach Al Brunette did not like the way Chiking’s nose looked and wisely called a halt to the bout. I have a feeling these guys will meet again some day. Morris wins by Injury Retirement II.

#6. Travis Salava – Peek a-Boo Boxing 140 Jonathan Solis – Brunettes

In one of the most exciting bouts of the evening, this one was a slug-fest from the get go. Solis came on strong giving Salava an 8 count and then tried to capitalize using up a lot of the gas in the tank, when he tired Salava came on with both guys willing to trade which brought the crowd to it’s feet several times. In a very close, well fought bout Solis by Dec in 3.

#7. Brad Heroff – Brunettes 140 Elias Rubio – Brunettes

Two guys whose opponents could not make it so they decided to go at it with each other! They obviously were familiar with each other from sparring in the gym so they did not get away with any surprises but did give a good account of each other. Heroff’s experience and hand speed was the difference, Heroff by Dec in 3.

#8. Mike Bernier – White Bear Lake 201+ Ryan Watson - Twin Ports

With Bernier being built like Ivan Drago and Watson being a National Champion the crowd was anxious as the boxers entered the ring and they were not disappointed. Bernier pursued bobbing and weaving and throwing some thunderous hooks as Watson calmly but with precision landed straight jabs followed by solid straight right hands. The crowd got going as these two guys let it all hang out with Watson’s height, reach and ring experience giving him the edge. In a good solid bout for both guys Watson wins by Dec.

Matchmaker: Bobby Brunette. Judges: Veid Muznicks, Arlye Wieshman, Vern Sweeny, Derek Delpino. Time Keeper: Lilly Coneberg. Physician at Ringside: Scott Benson. Referees: Gary Mizwa, Scott Erickson.

Minneapolis Versus St. Paul Golden Gloves

October 23rd Results.

In one of the oldest and most historic gymnasiums in the city of Minneapolis, where there have been many epic battles on the basketball court between St. Paul and Minneapolis teams over the years. DeLaSalle High school provided a border battle of a different kind Saturday night as Golden Gloves boxers competed for bragging rights between the two cities.

#1. Francisco Escamillia Mpls. 65Lbs. B.J. Bellonger St. Paul

In a battle of pint size warriors both willing to trade for the entire round Escamillia scored an 8 ct in the second and victory in the end. Escamillia by Dec 3.

#2. Jeremy Starks Mpls. 155Lbs. Deondre Riley St. Paul

Riley took control and pressed the fight from the first bell going both upstairs and downstairs. Starks seemed like he was waiting for Riley to slow down but was absorbing punishment while doing so, it was too much for Starks with the referee waiving off the action in the 2nd round. Riley wins RSC 2nd Rd.

#3. Clyde Willrich Mpls. 145Lbs. Ben Musha St. Paul

This was a good action bout with contrasting styles Willrich being the shorter aggressor and Musha the taller counter puncher. Both boxers had their moments with the pressure by Willrich being the difference. Willrich by Dec 3.

#4. Zach Hill Mpls. 150Lbs. Elias Rubio St. Paul

These guys are both big punchers and were very willing to try and drop the bomb on one another. These guys went after each other with mean intent both landing meaningful blows. In the third both men stepped in to deliver a big blow and Hill’s landed first sending Rubio to the canvas for a flash knockdown. It may have been the difference in a close bout. Hill by Dec 3.

#5. Josh Melton Mpls. 140Lbs. Jesse Watts St. Paul

In a bout featuring a couple of new faces to the amateur boxing scene Melton was aggressive and caught Watts unexpectedly with several body and head shots. The referee halted this one quickly, Melton wins RSC #1.

#6. Anthony Rose Mpls. 160Lbs. Veshawn Owens St. Paul

Rose had both height and reach but Owens definitely has fast hands and good power. With Owens constantly forcing the action he caught Rose with a solid combination giving him and 8 count. In the end Owens pressure was the difference. Owens by Dec 3.

#7. Payton Lee Mpls. 140 Lbs. Flavio Beccerra St. Paul

These guys are both cagey veterans for their age and displayed their experience in an excellent bout. Both landed solid blows, displayed good defense and lateral movement as the chess match was on each taking turns scoring on the other. In a very close bout Becerra wins by Dec 3.

#8. Rondell Hubert Mpls. 145Lbs. Jaquez Davis St. Paul

Again you had Davis the taller boxer vs. Hubert the shorter puncher. This was a great match of very different styles. On the outside Davis would attempt to control the action using his jab and straight right hand and on the inside Hubert went to work landing both to the body and the head. Hubert was the busier of the two and earned the victory. Hubert by Dec 3.

Working together Lisa Bauch and Bobby Brunette put together the matches as the Regional Directors for St. Paul and Minneapolis, Dave Skoog a former Upper-Midwest Champion, made a significant donation to make all of this possible. I know they would have liked to attract a larger crowd but those in attendance got a treat with some excellent boxing. Chief of officials: Scott Erickson. Timekeeper: Lili Cronberg. Judges: Arlye Weisheim, Anna Phillips, Vern Sweeny, Tim Keane, Scott Erickson, Pete Bombach. Referees: Bobby Brunette, Joe Lucio, Gary Mizwa. Clerk: Dan Joyce. Physician at Ringside: Scott Benson. Joel Marsh Vice President of Upper-Midwest Golden Gloves presiding.

USA Boxing Show – River Falls WI – Results 10/09/10

Boyd Davis’ “Peek-a-Boo Boxing Club” and Abundant Life Church’s Pastor Ted Marsh did a great job of putting together a very nice night of amateur boxing on Saturday night in River Falls WI. The arena was excellent, state of the art technical support in the way of a “JumboTron” screen broadcasting the bouts, a sound system and three separate food vendors made for a perfect high-class setting. On top of that there were 5 MN bouts with all the boxers giving a good account of themselves and some very close competitive ring action:

Joe Anderson – Premier Fitness 156Lbs. Deondre Riley – Knuckle Up Boxing

Riley by RSC-1st rd.

Cody Anderson – White Bear Lk. 160Lbs. Trevor Fletcher – Peek-a-Boo Boxing

Anderson by RSC-1st rd.

Asai Rubio – Milwaukee CC 132Lbs. Anthony Campillo – Brunettes Boxing

Rubio by Dec 3 rds.

Fabian Gil Acuna – Milwaukee CC 140Lbs. Steven Campillo – Brunettes Boxing

Acuna by Decision 3 rds.

Veshawn Owens – Believers Gym 156Lbs. Randall Gouge – Moore WI.

Owens by Decision 3 rds.

The officiating was excellent and the show was managed very well, on-time and with so many bouts it ran quickly and smoothly. Referees: Patricia Pliner, Joe Lucio / Timekeeper: Gary Pliner / Judges: Matt Zawalski, Don Schumaker, Sierra Daniels / Physician: Paul McMillan / RN: Ashley Smetana / Matchmaker: Boyd Davis

Fall was in the air outside on Saturday night but inside Brunettes Gym on the East Side of St. Paul the temperature was rising due to 10 amateur boxers displaying their fistic skills. With 6 boxing shows going on in and around the Twin-Cities in 6 weeks it was a challenge just finding boxers that were not committed to other shows or that were nursing bumps and bruises from the previous two weeks. Bobby Brunette did a good job of putting together 5 very competitive bouts, all of the boxers showed up in good condition and ready to box. On to the action:
#1. Luke Schroeder Team Amos 100Lbs. Bryce Koenig Believers Boxing
Both guys were very busy and threw with both hands. They crowded each other and even though this one got a little sloppy at times both kids showed their “grittiness” repeatedly landing meaningful shots. Koenig showed a little more polish and kept his composure a little better which led him to a win. Koenig by Dec.
#2. Kody Nordstrom Horton’s Gym 140Lbs. Ervin Freeman III Brunettes Boxing
Both of these guys can punch and were willing to stand toe to toe and trade with each other. I have watched Freeman box in the past and he showed improved skills and displayed some solid power banging his way to victory stopping Nordstrom. Freeman RSC 3.
#3. Nick Wasnnek Horton’s Gym 178Lbs. Antonio Salazar White Bear Lake
Both of these guys are strong punchers and what they both lack in experience they make up for with sheer strength. Salazar was landing some serious left hooks in the second round and referee Scott Erickson administered 8 counts on three separate occasions. The punching power by Salazar was the difference. Salazar wins by Dec.
#4. Dustin Van Guilder W.B.L. 140Lbs. Brad Heroff Brunettes Boxing
This one started fast and ended quickly. Van Guilder gave up a lot of experience and Heroff gave up weight but was still the harder puncher. Heroff landed a serious combination to the head and Scott Erickson administered an 8 count, Heroff immediately followed up with a vicious body assault which left Van Guilder folded over, Erickson rightly called a stop to the action this one. Heroff wins RSC 1.
# 5. Rondall Hubbert Fergus Falls 150Lbs. Jay Lee Brunettes Boxing
In this four round main event that brought the crowd to its feet on several occasions we got to see a classic southpaw counter puncher (Lee) against a two fisted banger (Hubbert) both are regional champions and they put on quite a show. Lee gave up some size but showed a lot of heart against the harder punching Hubbert, Lee used some slick inside combinations in response to Hubbert’s two fisted attack with both boxers effectively scoring. This was a close 1 point decision. Lee by Dec 4.

The boxing on this show was crisp and every one of these boxers was ready to go which was nice to see. This one came off without a hitch. Referee: Scott Erickson, Time Keeper: Pete Bombach, Judges: Arlye Wieshman, Joe Lucio, Derel Delpino and Anna Phillips. Physician at Ringside: Sheldon Segal. Matchmaker: Bobby Brunette.

The sky was cloudy in Hugo when we arrived but no rain drops were felt. But it was raining punches in Lions Park as part of an amateur boxing show provided by the generosity of the Hugo Lions Club and Region II St. Paul Golden Gloves. The weather was cool but the boxing action was hot and enjoyed by a large crowd who enjoyed 16 bouts on the show. Due to the amount of bouts and the limited space we have, we are going to present the results of the show with little commentary.
