75 lbs Matt Umland (Wadena) dec Derek Dolezal (Willmar)
-Close fight, Derek was punching and countering off the back foot while Matt kept coming forward. Matt outworked Derek to get the win.

139 lbs Charles Carpenter (Wadena) dec Joe Jaye (St Cloud)
-First fight for both. Lots of throwing. Close until the 3rd until Joe started to get tired.

110 lbs Julie Jackson (Wadena) dec Amanda Larson (Willmar)
-Entertaining fight with a clash of styles. Julie had a reach advantage and used it well, very rangy. Amanda was shorter and fought well on the inside when she was there. Good win for Julie.

S-HWY BJ Gotchi (Leech Lake) by RET1 David Hayde (St Cloud)
-First fight for both boxers. Both were throwing big power punches. After the first round, David was checked by the doctor and the fight was stopped. He didn’t seem hurt but something must have happened for the fight to be stopped.

115 lbs Neil Janson (Wadena) EXH Kevin Harper (Wadena)
-First fight for Neil. Both were skilled punchers. Entertaining exhibition.

175 lbs Cole Cottrell (Wadena) dec Luke Genz (Brainerd)
-This was a good fight. First fight for both guys. Luke had a big fanbase from Brainerd show up which made it even more fun. Both were fighting well in the first two rounds, but with Cole landing the more meaningful shots. The third round was great, the best round of the night. The entire fight was a brawl and in the third Luke floored Cole and the fans went crazy. Cole made it out of the round and won a clear, well deserved decision.

106 lbs Albert Boldt (Wadena) dec Charleas Oothoudt (Leech Lake)
-I always love to see Albert fight, he’ll be great when he gets bigger and older. He had a severe size disadvantage in this fight, he had a much shorter reach than Charleas and Charleas used his reach very well. Albert did get in the inside and fought well there. Lots of punches thrown by both in the first two rounds, and both were exhausted in the 3rd. It was close, but I thought Charleas landed more.

S-HWY Jose Perez (Wadena) dec Devin Smith (Leech Lake)
-First fight for Devin. Jose dropped him in the first 30 seconds. Devin was smothering and both couldn’t seem to get a good range because of it. Fight went the distance and Jose won a clear decision.

148 lbs Rondell Hubbert (Fergus Falls) dec TJ Steward (Wadena)
-Great fight. Rondell is a little quicker than TJ, both have ripping hooks and hooks to the body, TJ is a great body puncher….something you don’t see much in the amateurs. Rondell is a good boxer/puncher and won the decision.

HWY Justin Isaacson (Wadena) RSC2 Ben Dohls (Wilmar)
-Justin and Jesse Wannamacher have been the most improved boxers out of Region 4 the last two years. Justin went down a weight division, looks to be in a lot better shape. Throws some big big shots. Justin dropped Ben in the first round with a shot off the temple. Floored him again in the 2nd and the fight was stopped.

185 lbs Nick Soliah (Fergus Falls) dec Patchrick Szathmary (Wadena)
-Really close fight. Patchrick was getting his shots off first and I thought he landed more than Nick. Close fight.

162 lbs Jesse Wannamacher (Fergus Falls) dec Dewayne Steward (Wadena)
-Four 2 minute rounds. Jesse has improved a lot, looked really good last night. His speed has increased. Dewayne boxed very well in the first and landed more than Jesse. Dewayne is a great boxer, but Jesse still likes to brawl and lured Dewayne into a slug fest in the 2nd round and Jesse dropped him. Both fought well the rest of the fight, but with Jesse landing more in the final 3 rounds to get the victory. Great fight.

Region 4 day one results (semifinals) in Wadena

1. 65 lbs Fernando Zavala (Willmar) dec Matt Umland (Wadena)

-Both were throwing a lot of punches and landing a lot. Close fight. Fernando has a nice uppercut.

2. 155 lbs Beau Denk (SCGG) dec Dylan Houle (Cloquet)

-This one left me scratching my head. Dylan was quicker, landing more shots and would change from southpaw to orthodox many times….he was the taller, more lanky boxer and Beau was stronger and may have been landing harder shots, but I thought Dylan won this fight no question.

3. 110 lbs Nathan Scott (Brainerd) dec Eloy Zavala (Willmar)

-Close, evenly matched fight with both boxers throwing good combinations.

4. 165 lbs Travis Petro (Wadena) RSC2 Kory Monacelli (Leech Lake)

-This was entertaining, one of the best fights of the night. Both were landing huge shots. Travis began landing huges punches resulting in the ref giving Kory 3 standing 8s and waving it off. Really good fight.

5. 175 lbs Gage Follet RSC1 Nick Soliah (Fergus Falls)

-Gage was outclassing Nick with quick, powerful punches and the bout was stopped in the 1st.

****REGION IV SEMIFINALS****

6. 152 lbs Jesse Wannamacher (Fergus Falls) RET2 Tom Fanjoy (Brainerd)

-Tom has quick hands but Jesse was landing the more accurate, harder punches. Tom retired in the 2nd from what it looked like a hand/thumb injury.

7. 152 lbs TJ Steward (Wadena) dec Brendan Feiler (SC Workout)

-This was a close fight with both guys gassing hard by the end. Lots of inside/brawling type fighting which took a lot of wind out of them. TJ winning sets up the Region IV championship rematch from 2009 with Jesse Wannamacher……should be another war and close fight, looking forward to it.

8. 165 lbs Shane Kern (Detroit Lakes) dec John Geyer (SCGG)

-I was looking forward to this fight the most after seeing it on the program. John is pretty skilled with good fundamentals and quick hands. Shane Kern is very strong but not as fast as other 165 pounders. Both fighters came out throwing good punches and all of a sudden Kern stretched Geyer with a huge straight right hand that left geyer on his back. Geyer made it out of the round and actually battled back and won the second round after losing the first. Kern was getting tired and the third round was very close. Kern will fight Travis Petro in the final tomorrow night.

9. HWY Trent Petro (Wadena) dec Ben Dohls (Willmar)

-Trent was the smaller man but fought beautifully. Pounded Dohls to the body and has a sweet left hook to the head. Dohls looked like he had the wind knocked out of him and couldn’t do anything to stop Petro from landing shots. Good fight for Trent.

10. HWY Glenn Sommars (White Earth) dec John Laplant (SCGG)

-Laplant has impressed me in the past and landed some huge shots on Glenn, but Glenn fought very well and was quicker and took the fight to John. Sommars wore him down and won a clear decision. Sommars will fight Trent Petro in the final tomorrow.

11. S-HWY Justin Issacson (Wadena) dec Judd Worley (SC Workout)

-Justin came out swinging and floored Judd just seconds into the round…..it looked to be all over for Judd. Worley fought back and by the second round, Issacson was getting tired. Judd almost won the last two rounds but came up short. Issacson will face Eric Lamb (SCGG) in the final.

132 and 178 lb championship bouts will be held tomorrow night.
